Stefan D. Abrams

Mr. Abrams was a Managing Director in charge of investment strategy at Kidder, Peabody prior to joining TCW in 1992. Before Kidder, he was for nearly 17 years a General Partner of Oppenheimer & Co., where he served as Chief Investment Strategist and manager of the firm’s investment advisory business. Earlier, he was a Partner of Bear Stearns & Co., where he started Bear Stearns Capital Management. Previously, he was also a Vice President and Portfolio Manager of the Abacus Fund. He began his investment career at Loeb Rhoades & Co. in 1962. He is a former Director and Chairman of the Finance Committee of Westell Technologies, Inc., former Trustee of Concord Academy, the American Ballet Theatre, the School of American Ballet, and of Vassar College. Mr. Abrams graduated from Harvard University magna cum laude with an AB in Economics, and an MBA in Finance and Marketing. He is a CFA charterholder and a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts.

Previously, he was with The First National Bank of Chicago. Mr. Alexos works on transactions across all of the firm’s industry sectors and currently serves on the Boards of Directors of National Mentor Holdings, Inc., Pierre Holding Corp., Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago, and Children’s Inner City Educational Fund and on the Advisory Board of Sirona Dental Systems GmbH.

 

Jonathan S. Bush

As chairman and chief executive officer, Jonathan Bush formulates the strategic direction for athenahealth and oversees all operations, business development and technology initiatives. In 1997, Bush co-founded athenahealth, a physician enterprise management service that integrates workflow, billing and collections. Bush's own firsthand experience - and frustration - as a medical practice administrator led him to the conclusion that healthcare needed a unique remedy for its error-prone, paper-laden business processes. athenahealth was born, and has focused on eliminating administrative inefficiency by empowering physicians with knowledge delivered through Web-based technology.

Bush brings solid experience in healthcare consulting and start-up ventures to athenahealth. Most recently, he served as an associate with J. Bush & Company, Inc., an investment management firm, and as a consultant with Booz-Allen & Hamilton. As a founding member of Booz-Allen's Managed Care Strategy Group, Bush led a team in the creation and implementation of corporate growth strategies.

Bush earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Wesleyan University and a master's degree with distinction in business administration from Harvard University.

 

Harvey V. Fineberg, M.D., Ph.D.

Harvey V. Fineberg is President of the Institute of Medicine. He served as Provost of Harvard University from 1997 to 2001, following thirteen years as Dean of the Harvard School of Public Health. He has devoted most of his academic career to the fields of health policy and medical decision making. His past research has focused on the process of policy development and implementation, assessment of medical technology, evaluation and use of vaccines, and dissemination of medical innovations.

Dr. Fineberg helped found and served as president of the Society for Medical Decision Making and also served as consultant to the World Health Organization. At the Institute of Medicine, he has chaired and served on a number of panels dealing with health policy issues, ranging from AIDS to new medical technology. He also served as a member of the Public Health Council of Massachusetts (1976-1979), as chairman of the Health Care Technology Study Section of the National Center for Health Services Research (1982-1985), and as president of the Association of Schools of Public Health (1995-1996).

Dr. Fineberg is co-author of the books Clinical Decision Analysis, Innovators in Physician Education, and The Epidemic that Never Was, an analysis of the controversial federal immunization program against swine flu in 1976. He has co-edited several books on such diverse topics as AIDS prevention, vaccine safety, and understanding risk in society. He has also authored numerous articles published in professional journals. In 1988, he received the Joseph W. Mountain Prize from the Centers for Disease Control and the Wade Hampton Frost Prize from the Epidemiology Section of the American Public Health Association. Dr. Fineberg earned his bachelor's and doctoral degrees from Harvard University.

 

Wayne Gattinella

Wayne T. Gattinella is President and CEO of WebMD, a leading online health consumer portal. He previously served as president of WebMD Health and has helped establish WebMD as the most recognized and trusted brand of health information for consumers and physicians. Under his direction, WebMD has also become the leader in providing private health and benefits portals for Fortune 500 companies and the country’s largest health plans. Gattinella has held senior management positions with leading companies, including Merck-Medco, where he served as executive vice president of marketing. He was also vice president of consumer marketing for MCI Telecommunications and led the company's marketing and new product initiatives during the new competitive period in the long distance market. He earned a bachelor's degree in finance and marketing from Drexel University and an MBA from St. Joseph's University.

Mr. Vietor presently is engaged as Senior Advisor to Lehman Brother's Healthcare Investment Banking Group, where he focuses on specialty pharmaceutical and information technology companies.  Except for two years at Emdeon Corp [formerly WebMD], Mr.Vietor has spent his career on Wall Street, primarily at Merrill Lynch, where he was an institutionally ranked research analyst, concentrating on the pharmaceutical industry, before joining Merrill Lynch's Healthcare Investment Banking, where he was a managing director.  Mr. Vietor also serves on the Board of Directors of a number of companies and has a number of consulting relationships in the healthcare sector.

Bob has been an investor in many successful healthcare services, medical technology and information technology companies. Some of the services companies he has backed are Community Health Systems (NYSE: CYH), Mariner Health Group (IPO/acquired), New England Critical Care (IPO/acquired), Renal Treatment Centers (IPO/acquired) and U.S. Labs. Bob's medical technology investments include AVEO Pharmaceuticals, Conor Medsystems (Nasdaq: CONR), Helicos BioSciences, Mitotix (Neuer Market: GPC Biotech AG), Origin Medsystems (acquired), PerSeptive Biosystems (IPO/acquired), Pervasis Therapeutics and PRAECIS PHARMACEUTICALS (Nasdaq: PRCS). In addition, Bob has also served on the boards of SmartBargains, Staples.com and WordWave (acquired by Merrill Corporation).

Before co-founding Highland, Bob was a general partner at a Boston-based venture capital partnership. Immediately prior to entering venture capital, he spent four years as the Executive Director of the John A. Hartford Foundation. Bob is a former Assistant to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and an Assistant to the head of the international division of the U.S. Treasury.

Also, Bob is a faculty member at the Harvard Business School where he teaches courses in entrepreneurial management.

 

R. Dale Ross

R. Dale Ross is the Chairman and CEO of US Oncology, one of the nation’s largest cancer treatment and research networks.  He was the founder of American Oncology Resources in 1992, the predecessor to US Oncology, and served as its President and CEO until it merged with PRN in June 1999 to become US Oncology.

In 1982, Ross founded HMSS, Inc., a home infusion therapy company, and served as its President and CEO until the company was sold in 1990. Before founding HMSS, Ross served in various sales management positions for American McGaw Laboratories, a manufacturer of intravenous solutions and a division of American Hospital Supply Corporation.

Ross also served his country in the United States Air Force for six years.

 

Kári Stefánsson

Kári Stefánsson, M.D., Dr. Med. has served as President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director since he co-founded deCODE in August 1996. Dr. Stefánsson was appointed to serve as the Chairman of our Board of Directors in December 1999. From 1993 until April 1997, Dr. Stefánsson was a professor of Neurology, Neuropathology and Neuroscience at Harvard University. In addition, from 1993 through December 1996 he was Director of Neuropathology at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. From 1983 to 1993, he held faculty positions in Neurology, Neuropathology and Neurosciences at the University of Chicago. Dr. Stefánsson received his M.D. and Dr. Med. from the University of Iceland and is board-certified in neurology and neuropathology in the United States.
